CHURCH IN SUNNY SCARBADOS!

This Sunday there will be no meetings in Chesterfield and Alfreton because we are off for a day at the seaside.  There are a few places left if you haven't booked your seat already.  The coach will leave Chesterfield at 8.30am bound for Scarborough.  I believe we may well have bus bingo again this year to speed the journey along.

We have lunch together on the beach and then people choose how they want to spend their day.  Some like to wander round the shops while others prefer a ride on the Pirate Ship.  There's usually a sandcastle competition and the opportunity to beat Dave at rounders!  Whatever you choose to do it's a fun church family day out together.

THRIVING IN GWERU, ZIMBABWE

Thriving Farm
Report from Gweru, Zimbabwe

Charles Kudzerema reports that the new irrigation system and electric motor that was installed in the spring has allowed a good harvest of tomatoes on the farm in Gweru, Zimbabwe. This has enabled the farm to provide food and income to families in the local villages and sell produce in the local markets, along with providing food for the poor in the local area.

(Thank you to everyone at NLC who brought in their pennies to contribute towards this project)

YE OLDE STREET PASTORS

If you happen to be visiting the Medieval Market in Chesterfield on Tuesday 24th July have a look out for the Street Pastor and School Pastor stall.

We will be raising funds for our work and need the generous support of all our friends please.

WHOLE CHURCH MEETING AT RAGGED SCHOOL

This Sunday we are delighted to welcome Rob and Marion White to our whole church meeting at the Ragged School, Markham Rd.  We are temporarily meeting at the Ragged School while building work takes place to put in a new coffee bar at the Winding Wheel.

We are looking forward to another great time together as we worship God and to hear the word Rob has prepared for us.
Recently a couple of our home groups have been using his book 'Teach Us to Pray' which is based on the prayer Jesus taught his disciples.  Rob and Marion's have taken a lead with Youth for Christ and Hope for Justice and have a wealth of experience of walking with Christ to share.

If you can't make Sunday morning they will also be at Cafe Church at the Compass, West Bars on Sunday 6-7pm.  All welcome.

SUMMER HOLIDAY SCHEME

A few years back a lot of volunteers from NLC got involved with
Community Youngstars.  We had a great time and a lot of families were blessed.  Please read on to find out about a project that is running this year that needs your help...

The RAY (Rother Action Youth) project is set up to provide activities for children throughout the summer holidays.  It’s run by a group of different people from a variety of backgrounds who want to provide a fun time for children from the Grangewood, Birdholme, Boythorpe and St Augustine areas of Chesterfield.

We need people to help with different things, from making sandwiches, sorting food provided by Fairshare, to helping ‘hands-on’ with activities.  There are different needs on different days, but the main need for help is:

Tuesdays 3pm-6pm  (helping with activities);
Wednesdays and Fridays 11am -2pm  (making sandwiches);
Fridays 2pm -4pm  (helping with activities).

You don’t need to be there the whole time, just an hour or so would be appreciated.  The activity sessions are taking place on Tuesday in St Augustine’s church (Derby Road) and on Fri on the Langer Field Park.

This is a great chance for us to get to know some of the families who potentially will be coming to Umbrellas in the future, and also to really get to know some of the people who are already working here, from local councillors to Children’s Centre staff, to volunteers.

If you want to know more, or are interested in coming along to help, then contact Jane Bentley.  This is our way of being salt and light to the community.

DAVE'S MESSAGE THIS SUNDAY

Isn't it just like a man to change his mind at the last minute!  To be fair, the message Dave had planned for this week was relegated to 'coming soon' as God made it grow into something else.  If you missed it, here are a few of my notes...

Who said: I've had enough! (1 Kings 19)
No one is bothered about me.  They don't care! (2 Timothy 4)
If God is really is with us, why has all this happened to us? (Judges 6)

No matter what circumstances brought us there we have all shared these feelings at some time.  We need to do what each of these people did and draw on the refreshing and revitalising power of God.

If we have lost our "va va voom", God can REVITALISE
If our vision has grown old, God can RENEW
If we feel stale, God can REFRESH
If we started well but have ground to a halt, God can RESTART
If our batteries are flat, God can RE-ENERGISE
If our strength is sapped, then God can RE-INVIGORATE
If we lack vitality, God can REVITALISE
If our lives seem to have lost shape, God can REFORM
If we feel lost, God will help us to REDISCOVER

In 1 Kings 19 Elijah seeks refuge under the shade of a broom tree because he is so weary of life that he wants to die.  The broom is seen as a symbol of invigoration.  It can survive all kinds of harsh conditions in the desert and provides shelter for others.

In that place God provided food to nourish Elijah's physical body, he gave assurance that the problem was being dealt with to renew his thinking and finally God reveals himself to Elijah in a new way to fire up his spirit. The process began with Elijah sharing with God how he felt and then listening and receiving from God.

It is God who does the refreshing but sometimes he will use us in the process.  Paul speaks very highly of Philemon:

Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.  Philemon 1:7

The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.  Proverbs 11:25

Be a refresher of God's people and see how God will refresh and revitalise you too!

JESUS TRANSFORMS LIVES

This Sunday (8th July) the title for Dave's message is 'Restoration Unlimited'

I watched a programme yesterday where a designer rescued items that were going to be thrown on the tip.  She saw potential in the grottiest of things and took them away to restore and renovate them for a new life with new purpose.  God is the ultimate restorer.  He created us for a purpose and no matter how much the world has misused us, how scruffy and stressed out we are, how much of the dirt of sin has spoiled us, when he looks at us he sees the beautiful unique person he created and remembers the plan he has always had for our lives.

The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength.
You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
12 Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities.
Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.  (Isaiah 58 11-12)

Isaiah prophecies that those who have been restored can become restorers in the lives of others where they live.  Who do you know that you could invite to hear the good news about the Jesus who can restore lives?  This is a powerful message that will transform lives - who do you know who needs to be at the Ragged School with us this Sunday?

24 HOURS OF PRAYER

Grace Chapel have faithfully organised a day of prayer for Chesterfield for quite a few years now.  They invite church leaders from across the town to come and take a one hour slot during the 24 hours between 7.30 am on Friday 6th July to 7.30 am to Saturday 7th July.  You are welcome to join the prayer at anytime during that period.
Dave would appreciate anyone who can support him when he leads the prayer between 11 am and 12 noon on Friday.

Imagine the defeats being inflicted on our enemy and the victories being won when the body of Christ comes together to pray with one voice for our town.
