Our autumn Alpha Courses are just about to get underway in both Chesterfield and Alfreton and it's not too late to register and book your place 01246 200768.

The Alpha Course is for those who are interested in investigating Christianity and what Christians believe.  It's a great place to ask all your questions in a relaxed, friendly environment.  We will do our best to answer your questions based on what the Bible teaches and we have had some very interesting discussion times.

We begin each evening session by sharing a meal together and follow up with a short talk and an opportunity to ask questions or just sit back and listen to the discussion.

These courses have proved so popular that we run
them regularly and booking in advance is essential
 to help our catering team.

This Sunday there are no meetings at Stretton or Alfreton because we are all gathering together to meet at The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield at 10.30am.

There is always something special about these meetings when the whole church comes to worship God together.  This Sunday we are being led in worship by the worship team from Clay Cross and our speaker will be Martyn Rowe from Alfreton.

If you want to see what church is really about and experience church family in action this would be a great Sunday to come along and join us.  Everyone welcome.

Technology!!!  Well, as you know, me and all that stuff go together like a horse and carriage, like pie and peas, caviar and champagne.  We were made for each other, a marriage made in heaven - or perhaps not!

For many years I resisted the onslaught of technology like the old man that you think I am, the proverbial dinosaur.  With great reluctance I stepped into it simply because, like many others of my generation, I found it so difficult.  I knew the need and advantages of what could be achieved but there were others who could do it for me - why have a dog and bark yourself! ("Woof" said the typist!)  It left me free to do what I do best. But it turns out you can teach an old dog like me new tricks.

Now I live off my mobile, texting and emailing in droves.  I recognise the value of it all, great websites, quality productions.  I can contact a whole home group with the touch of a button and I can send a continuous stream of work to my secretary. ("What a blessing!" said the typist).

The conversation texting is more difficult.  I'm not that fast still and when I'm bombarded by different people at the same time some have to go on hold. Sorry.  Oh for the ease of a telephone call!  I'm so much better at chatting.

Texting is great but sometimes you can't read intention or motive of heart.  Oh for the time when we just talked.  You could hear the intonation of the voice, see the glint in their eye, the tongue in their cheek, the smile or the scowl and all the other gestures that make it clear what is really being said and how we are meant to take it.

Texting and the like can be for cowards.  I hear that people have broken relationships with a text, bullied others by email and Facebook or it can be used for posting loads of drivel about, well about nothing.  Unless you really need to know when someone is going shopping or needing the toilet! Only joking, I'm sure that's all fun.

Seriously, I realise texting, emails and Facebook can be used for great good.  I know people who put testimonies, encouraging verses of scripture and uplifting quotes on Facebook.  It's great for those who are lonely or those wanting to catch up with friends all over the world.

However Facebook can be used to pour out all our grumbles, negative feelings, moans and groans, even used to attack others.  If we feel bad isn't it better to talk to someone who will help.  It's good to talk.

When I was young, many, many moons ago, I was taught two things, one by my mum..."Don't air your dirty linnen in public.".  In other words don't spill it out your private business to everyone.  Some people would involve the whole street if they could and get as many people joining in as possible.  Then they wonder why the problem just grows and grows.

The other thing I was taught was "Don't wee on everyone else's strawberries."  That means don't put out stuff that discourages others.  They may be having a great day and then I come along and put paid to all that by enveloping them in my cloud of gloom and rain on their parade.  We all have bad days.  Call me old fashioned if you like, but let's instead go to God, to a friend, a leader but not on Facebook.

So let's use all this social media but in a positive way.  Facebook can be used in amaziing ways for good, to share your love and kindness, to spread good news and the gospel, to encourage and lift up everyone around you, giving them the courage to face life.  That's all great.

If that chapter in James had been written today it wouldn't just say that the tongue is a power for good and evil but Facebook too.  So use it as Jesus would for the glory of God.  Then, who knows, you might even find me on Facebook next!  Miracles do happen.

If, like Ben, you have to miss The Evidence at our morning meeting in Chesterfield you don't have to miss out altogether.  The team will also be coming to Cafe Church at The Compass on West Bars 6-7pm.  They will be leading a short worship time followed by some testimonies about the power of God and how he has transformed their lives.  You will be amazed to hear how impossible situations have been turned around and these are first hand accounts from the men themselves. We'll have refreshments afterwards and an opportunity to talk with members of the team.  An hour that could change your life forever!

Yes NLC Chesterfield are back at the Winding Wheel from this Sunday (14th September) and we are celebrating in style with a visit from The Evidence from Teen Challenge UK.

The first ever Chesterfield Marathon is also on this Sunday. There will be a knock on effect for us as many of the roads around the Winding Wheel will be closed first thing in the morning and opening up again through the morning from 9am onwards. To allow for a bit of extra travelling time we will start the meeting at 11am tomorrow.

Please go the extra mile (literally!) to be there.  Your reward will be an excellent time with the Teen Challenge team and lunch together afterwards.  We will provide jacket potatoes but if you would like to bring something to go with them or a dessert that would be great.  Plates and cutlery will be provided.

Diversions will be in place but if you can approach from Brimimgton side of town, towards the railway station, and come to the car park behind the WW that way you shouldn't have any problems. Hopefully by the time we've had lunch the roads will pretty much be clear.

Ben is running the half marathon for charity - please pray!

This Sunday there will be no meetings at our usual venues in Alfreton, Chesterfield and Stretton because we will all be joining together at party in the Park in Alfreton.  We will be there with live music and free children's activities from 10am to 4pm and a short open air service at 11am.  Our prayer tent will be available all day for anyone who would just like some quiet space or would like to receive prayer.  We will also be advertising the Alpha Course that will be starting this month in Alfreton.

Around 2pm will be setting up the course for our sports day races and inviting children of all ages to come and take part.  Bev is ready to take on challengers for the Ladies Egg and Spoon Race!

It's a great family event with lots of free activities to enjoy.
