This year the run up to Christmas has been really busy with so many great events put on across the church.  The Christmas Concert at the Winding Wheel drew a full house again this year including music, poetry and those wonderful videos looking at the Christmas story from the perspective of the those who experienced it at the time.
Then there was all the fun and splendid food at the party on Thursday.
Lovely atmosphere for Carols by Candlelight at Stretton last Saturday with traditional carols and bible readings.  Sunday morning in Chesterfield was a delight with Ben's performance as the grumpy inkeeper and J Team playing all of the other nativity characters.  Well done to all the children and their costume-makers!
Several H&E issues during the chocolate gospel - as Lucy and Ellie flung the chocolate bars named in the story to the first hand up.  Glad to report no one was injured during the making of this spectacle!
Last but not least it was lovely to sit back and enjoy Carols by Candlelight in Al;freton - lovely family atmosphere plus those of us who had been in Chesterfield in the morning had a head start with the chocolate gospel this time!
Have a very Happy Christmas Everyone and a good rest!

Congratulations to Wes and Sophie Wright on the birth of Noah Edward.  NLC now has two very proud Aunties (Faye & Emma) and delighted grandparents (Trev & Janet). So cute!

On Monday our shoeboxes were taken down to the Samaritan's Purse checking and distribution centre on Chatsworth Road.  We were delighted that between Alfreton, Chesterfield and the collection at Alison's school at Hasland we were able to drop off 87 boxes.

Once the boxes have been checked and sealed they will be off to a desination in Eastern Europe. Picture those 87 smiles as children open the boxes you prepared.

The ladies at the distribution centre were a little swamped having just received 2,000 shoeboxes collected by Shoezone and were checking and sealing up boxes with gusto! It's wonderful that people in our area have been so generous.

Sunday, 8 December 2013

We began this morning in worship and Dave told three stories of people in the Bible who gave what they had to help others - the widow and the coins that she put in the offering though it was all she had; the boy who gave up his lunch so Jesus could do a miracle and feed 5,000 and from the parable, the good Samaritan who used what he had to help the man he found.  When we give from what we have to help others God's blessing is bound to follow.

But even as Dave was speaking he could tell that we all really wanted to do was get packing shoeboxes!  So we did, some wrapping the boxes while others chose items to go inside and all making a card to put inside to carry a special message from us.  The videos we saw show how much these shoeboxes mean to the children who receive them and we pray each one will be a blessing to a child.  See more pictures from Chesterfield this Sunday on our facebook page.

NLC's Derek Hopkinson (pictured in the centre) along with colleagues from Highfield's School took on the Movember challenge to grow a stylish tache during the month of November this year.  The purpose is two-fold.  Firstly to raise awareness of serious health issues affecting men and the importance of reporting any early signs to a doctor asap.  Secondly through sponsorship to raise money to help fund research.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone at school, church, family and friends they have raised a lot of money this year and grown some quite amazing moustaches!.

Just to let you know that so far we have been very blessed and thank you for all the prayers. As you probably have seen on the news Nelson Mandela has passed away. There is a lot of tension about what could aspire now as there have been previous calls for "haruru" meaning 'the night of the long knives' when some may want to kill white people - it originates from the past culture. It is what apparently has been circulating for months in South Africa. Prayer will break this call for violence and we cannot believe that we are finding ourselves here at this time?! Thank you for covering us in prayer - we appreciate the prayer back-up and support from our God Family! God is ministering to our children in a very real way through others here in a God ordained way. We are thankful and stand amazed!
Love and God bless from Andre and Petra

We are hosting the next in the Worship Central course at St John's, Walton this Saturday at St John's, Walton.  The subject is 'Leading Worship' but it's not just for worship leaders.  If you want to learn more about how to get yourself properly prepared to worship come along on Saturday. Starts 9am with a light breakfast, followed by worship, teaching, discussion groups and aiming to end around noon.

School Pastors' &
Street Pastors' trees
NLC support the work of the Street Pastors and School Pastors in Chesterfield with volunteers involved in both projects.  Drop in at St Thomas' Church, Brampton this weekend to see the Street and School Pastors' trees on display in the Christmas Tree Festival. 34 trees in total representing organisations and businesses working and serving in our community.

It was the last of our Alpha course tonight with Dave speaking on 'The Church'.  Church is not a building or a service on a Sunday morning it is the family of God worshipping him and sharing their lives together.  Wonderful that so many have discovered this reality and amazing how it has transformed their lives.  If you missed out this time but would be interested in the next Alpha early in 2014 contact Dave to book your place 01246 200768.

In Chesterfeld this morning God spoke to us during the worship about being safe and secure in him regardless of the situations we might be facing.  He is our rock and our refuge.  Derek told of the time he and a friend decided to swim out to sea to look back on the bay and headland.  They soon realised when they were in open water that the pull of the tide was more than a match for their swimming strength and they were being drawn out to sea.  Derek turned and began to swim against the tide towards a rock.  To his surpise he found he was making headway because the rock itself was affording him some protection.  They both eventually reached the rock and climbed up onto it and he remembers how relieved he was to feel safe.  We need to live in that place of safety, firmly established through the word of God on Jesus our Rock and know that security whatever else is going on around us.

Talita brought a strong challenge to us to be a people of God's word because we are all engaged in a spiritual battle and we need a sharp sword to be effective.  We need to live by the word to release it's power in our lives to live in victory and to be able to rescue others who need God's help through us.

Ben's preach was entitled 'Walking With the Lord.  A Hitchiker's Guide'. We are made Spirit, Soul and Body.  When Soul and Body have their way we cut ourselves off from our connection with God and lose sight of who we are and the authority God has given us.  When Spirit in relationship with the Holy Spirit through God's word has Lordship, our lives become more God focused and he is able to direct us in line with his will which is guaranteed victory and blessing.

These are just some of the fantastic outfits from the 1980's night at The Compass.  Brings the full horror of 80's fashion back to life.  Everyone had a great time with the quiz, some dancing to music from that era with crisps & nibbles while they nattered.  The next social event at The Compass is 'New Life's Got Talent' on Saturday 25th January - let Bev and Nick know if you'd like to take part.

Friday, 29 November 2013

It's 80's night at the Compass this Saturday 7.30pm.  There will be music, a quiz and unfortunately some fashion all from the 1980's.  Don't remind me please!  What did we look like!  It'll be lots of fun and very entertaining with Nick and Bev at the helm so bring your friends along for a good evening.

It's just so wonderful when someone takes Jesus as Lord of their life and wants to be baptised.  A practical demonstration of their decision to leave their old life behind and choosing to live in the resurrection power of Jesus.  For Amy and Matthew this was a really special time and it was a privilege to be there to share it with them.
'If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come.' 2 Corinthians 5:17

We had a table at the Health and Healing Fair in Clay Cross on Saturday.  In amongst all sorts of alternatives being offered, we wanted to give people the chance to choose to come to Jesus for their healing.  We gave away free literature and DVDs, were able to pray with some people on the day and others put a prayer request in the box for us to pray afterwards. There were also interesting chats with some of the other stall holders. Big thanks from organiser, Joy, to all those who came and manned the stall and to those who covered the event from 10am - 5pm with prayer. We had a good day and very worthwhile.

Sunday, 24 November 2013

God was really wanting us to know our security is in him this morning.  Peter brought a word that we are safe in God's hands.  Jesus does not plan to return for a church that is broken and hanging on.  He plans to return for a beautiful, radiant, spotless bride who has made herself ready.  We shouldn't be afraid or take offence when God brings correction or adjustment into our lives, it's part of the process.  We are in safe hands and we can trust in his love for us.

Dave reminded us there's more to life than what we can see with our natural eyes.  Jesus, the King of Kings chooses to live in us when we accept him as Lord, continually interceding for us before the Father and working in our lives to bring him glory.  The Holy Spirit becomes our teacher and guide, developing his fruit in our lives and gifting us supernaturally to accomplish our mission.

There is a whole spiritual realm which we are not normally able to see with our natural eyes - though some have.  The Bible tells us God instructs his angels to minister to those who will inherit salvation.  Elisha's servant saw just the powerful enemy army surrounding them until God opened his 'spiritual eyes' to see the armies of heaven, far more numerous, far greater who were protecting them.

‘Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’   2 Kings 6:16

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.  1 John 4:4

We really are in a very safe pair of hands - the hands of our loving Father God.

Reminder that we will all be meeting together in Chesterfield this Sunday 10.30am at The Winding Wheel.  Looking forward to a great time worshipping God together and hearing the message Dave has for us.
Jane will be setting up a bookstall with a selection of items from Cornerstone bookshop in Matlock.  Emma will also have her cards, Christmas and birthday available for sale.
See you there!

Then just as exciting, in the afternoon, we have two baptisms, Matthew and Amy.  Everyone welcome at 3pm Clay Cross Baptist Church, Market St.

Matt Bunting is going to work on mission in Rwanda for 3 months early next year.  He needs our support in agreeing to sponsor him financially.  He will have a form with him on Sunday and will be happy to receive whatever you are able to give.
Nick has organised a Curry Night at Bilal's in Eckington for Thursday 12th December 7.30pm.  Tickets for the meal will cost £15 out of which £4 will go directly to Matt in sponsorship.  There will also be an auction - rumour has it  for one auction lot Jane has offered to make one of her fantastic cakes for the highest bidder.

We've been doing this for a few years now and it nevers fails to impact on us how much our little shoe box of gifts means to the children who receive them.  For many it is the first ever Christmas present they have received, for most it is the only one they will receive.  The children's faces just light up as they delve into their boxes and see what treasures they have received.

There are restrictions on what you can include so pick up a leaflet which will tell you what to do.  Then choosing the contents of your box can be good fun making sure you write on the label if your box is for a boy or girl and which age group.

Don't forget to wrap the box and lid separately in brightly coloured paper and to include £2.50 towards admin costs

On Sunday 8th December at both the Chesterfield and Alfretom meetings we will collect in the boxes and have a great time together looking at the work of Operation Christmas Child run by the charity Samaritan's Purse.

It is that time of year again, our Christmas Tesco collection is coming up at the end of this month. On Friday 29th and Saturday 30th of November we will be collecting in Chesterfield Tesco Extra from 0930 - 1700 and need your help! This year's operation is a big one, aiming for upwards of 2 tonnes and we need you to help us achieve this.

We have 90 minute slots (0930 - 1100, 1100 - 1230, 1230 - 1400, 1400 - 1530, 1530 - 1700) but if you can only do an hour or indeed can do a half day or even a whole day then all help is appreciated! Please contact Ben Martin if you can give some time to this valuable collection before the Christmas distributions either by replying to this email ben@theorderoftheblacksheep.com  or by calling 07984 589456. If you know others who may be able to help please do urge them to contact us.

Kind regards,

Ben Martin

Caleb celebrated his first birthday surrounded by a great crowd of friends and family today at his dedication.  A lovely family time together as his parents made a public commitment to pray for him, to bring him up to know the love of God and in their lives to set a good example for him.  Family, church family and friends committed to uphold them in this task and to give their support and encouragement.

The birthday feast that followed was splendid - thank you to everyone for making and bringing so many nice things that made the buffet really special.

Who hasn't gone misty eyed at the sight of little children putting on a Christmas performance?  We all love it, don't we? Schools take weeks to practise and perfect their performances and still we love it best when some little character decides to improvise or make an inappropriate comment very loudly and at the wrong moment!
Our JTeam always treat us to a great performance on the last Sunday before Christmas - this year Sunday 22nd December - but they get very limited time to practise on a Sunday morning.  Rehearsals will begin on Sunday 1st December and continue for the following two Sundays.  Parents, please could we ask you to do your level best to ensure your children are at the Sunday meeting for those three weeks so they can practise together.  We want everyone to be included and they will feel so much more secure and confident if they have been to all the practices.  Thank you.

Great time this morning as we all got together from Clay Cross, Alfreton and Chesterfield at the Winding Wheel.  Such a buzz in the room as people were catching up with each other over coffee before the worship began. Worship focussed on the nature of God's love towards us and our response to that love.

Peter's message: God's Got It Covered!  Noah was instructed to paint the ark inside and out with pitch (same root word in hebrew for atonement) to waterproof it against the water.  When God's judgement came, in the form of the flood, Noah and his family were not only waterproofed but judgement-proofed too!  In the same way, we as Christians are told again and again in the New Testament that we are 'in Christ' and in him we are also judgement-proofed.
Romans 8:1 "There is now, no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus"

Whatever situations we might be facing, no matter how big a mountain it may seem, the work of Christ on the cross has paid for it and God is more than ready, willing and able to help.  He's got it covered!

Prophetic word to the church brought by Peter Topliss at the joint meeting in Chesterfield on Sun 27th October 2013.

...Where you are right now; in your level of faith, in your experience of Christ, in your understanding of the scriptures, in your testimony for Jesus, that’s not your finishing standard.

I’m speaking today what I feel God is saying over every single person here who knows Jesus as Lord.   You’re part of the church. As soon as you gave your life to Jesus, in other words you believed God raised him from the dead and you confessed him as your Lord, the Bible says you’re saved.  At that very moment, that instant, the Holy Spirit baptised you into the body of Christ. For we were all baptised, by one Spirit, into one body.

If you look round you may not like everybody here.  It’s a shock, isn’t it when you find out not everybody likes you?  I keep discovering it!  Nevertheless we are baptised into one another, we’re part of one another, we’re members one of another. God’s saying wherever your life is that’s not your finishing point before we get to glory, before we leave this earth. How that pans out, however that happens, whatever your theology of the end times, however it’s going to take place, you are going to make progress in the things of God.

Every single one and it will always be a stretch to you.  You’ll always think you’re out of control.  “I can’t manage this. This is beyond what I’ve known.”  But I believe God is saying get rid of the ‘this’ll do mentality’.

Abram, I might get to preach on him if I get there, Abram spent two thirds of his life in deserts.  And when he actually started his ministry he was 80.  When he began he had 80 years of preparation and 40 years of actually ministering but he was always progressing in the things of God and you will progress if you will just surrender to the Lord.

Whittington Home group braved the wind and rain for a night out together at Matlock Bath.  Yes, we all got very soggy but nobody's spirits were dampened and we even managed to have a laugh with fellow passengers on the Park & Ride bus which got stuck in the traffic!  We all enjoyed great fish and chips (Ivan and Tom pictured) and the firework display before heading home to dry out!  A good evening with our church family.

It's all change this weekend!
This Sunday we have had to swap the venue for the whole church meeting.  So instead of meeting in Alfreton as planned we will be meeting in Chesterfield 10.30am at The Winding Wheel.  Looking forward to a great time together.

Don't forget to put your clock back this weekend and enjoy that extra hour!

Following on from the success of the 6 week summer holiday play scheme YoungStars is launching a new holiday club for half term next week.  It will be running in the mornings 10-12 at Church in the Peak, New Street,  Monday - Friday.  NLC did such a fantastic job of supporting in the summer and they would really appreciate your help again.  If you are available for any of the mornings please let Jacky know.  It will be lots of fun and in a great new venue!

A big thank you to everyone who brought food donations for the food bank last Sunday.  I dropped them off at Loundsley Green on Friday afternoon and again had the pleasure of seeing our gifts go out to families in Chesterfield who are really struggling for a variety of reasons.  Since we started in June, so far you have given 178 kilos of food which is amazing.  At this rate by Christmas we will be close to the quarter of a ton mark!

On top of this £50 was raised by Bev and Nick at our Cheese and Wine evening which will also be used to buy food for the food bank.  Thanks to everyone who joined in.

The next collection Sunday is November 3rd. All contributions are gratefully received but these are the items we are particularly running low on:

UHT or powdered milk - small and large sizes
long life fruit juice - small multi packs or carton
dried mashed potato
sugar - 1 kilo and 500g bags
any tinned veg
breakfast cereal
items that can be chosen as 'treats' - toiletries, tomato sauce, hot chocolate, sweets for children etc

I wish I could show you the faces of the people who receive what you bring and how much it means to them.  Trusting that God will bless you for your generosity to these people in need.

As I was upgrading the operating system of my phone, I felt The Lord say the following:
It is time to upgrade and update your operating system.  No longer must you be content with a mixture of Spirit and flesh because the two don't mix, they oppose.  Receive a new download of My Spirit, which is your new operating system, for there is much that I want to take you into but you must receive a new infilling of My Spirit if you are to operate fully and freely in the days ahead.  There are things coming which will make no sense to the natural mind, so upgrade now!

Be people of My Word and My Spirit.  Remember that friendship with the world is enmity with Me.  Draw near to me in faith and be refreshed in My Spirit.  Tune in again!  Live in My Word and live freely, for My Kingdom shall be established in fullness.  Only people of the Word and Spirit will bring the Kingdom to bear in these days so receive a new download of grace, love and walk in the truth.

Please would you pray for Gaynor's son Dave and his wife Becca who are part of a team from New Life Church in Derby on mission in Calcutta, India at the moment.  They are working with homeless children who live around the railways dodging the police and trying to make a living by collecting plastic bottles.  It's a dangerous lifestyle and they have little opportunity just to be children.  The team are doing a fantastic job, working really hard in difficult conditions.  Please support them in prayer.

Hosted by New Life Church at St John's, Walton Back Lane, Walton 9am - 12noon on Saturday 5th October and continuing on the first Saturday of the month through into next year.  Co-written by Al Gordon and Tim Hughes this course consists of 7 sessions focusing on different aspects of worship and the role of worship teams.

When Gail Robinson and Helen Russell first saw this course they were struck by the potential benefit to NLC from such excellent teaching.  Rather than keep such a good thing to ourselves they decided to open it up and extend an invite to all the churches in our area.  So if you want to learn more about worship or to challenge yourself to grow in your worship get this date in your diary and we look forward to seeing you there on Saturday.  Contact Gail for more information 07808 448746.

This Sunday is a joint meeting 10.30am at The Winding Wheel, Chesterfield.  Always a dynamic time when we meet together and this time it is also 'Back to Church Sunday' so we are inviting anyone who's been thinking of giving church a try or maybe never been to church to make this the week.  Lucy is leading us in worship and Dave has a preach to ignite the fire of faith and rekindle a passion for God.  We're going to have a great morning together.  See you there!

Talita gave a great presentation in Chesterfield today about the work of the charity 'Compassion'.  Through sponsorship of individual children the charity works with local churches to achieve amazing results.  As a Christian charity they work to provide the vital support and education the children need now but also to tell them the good news about Jesus which will transform their lives for ever.
If you've thought about becoming a sponsor and can commit to £21 per month it's not too late, just have a chat one Sunday with Ben or Talita.

After all your hard work at the BBQ last Saturday this week we have a real treat for you.  Come along to the Compass on West Bars, Chesterfield this Saturday 21st Sept for a Cheese and Wine Party from 7pm.  A nice relaxed, fun evening filled with cheesy music, a cheesy quiz and yes, plenty of cheese! Everyone is welcome so invite a friend or a neighbour to come with you.  If you would like to bring some of your favourite cheese along for the buffet or something to drink that would be great.  Look forward to seeing you.
